Believe it or not....

I actually got offline for a little while yesterday!

I felt like I hadn't used my legs in months and fought through the searing pain of sunlight as it forced its way through my eyes.

It was hard not to squint and although I wanted to retaliate back to the comfort of my couch dent, I forged ahead!

As soon as I got outside the sweat came pouring off of my face, which was the moment I had an Epiphany and realized that in order for my venture outdoors, I had to find a place to hide from that damned sun ASAP!

I got in my car and put down the sun visor while looking for my shades, and immediately cranked up the AC as the sweat started forming behind my knees. Ugh!

My gas tank was as hungry as I was so I figured a quick trip to the gas station would fulfill us both. A slim jim and 2 gallons of gas later, we were both feeling a little better about this venture.

The car had cooled down enough to be tolerable and the traffic wasn't nearly as bad as the jam I had conjured up in my head so I decided I might not need that last Kolonopin after all. I did have to figure out where to go though before this asshole behind me blows an artery the way he's blowing his horn.

I made a left which was surprisingly easier than making a right. About that time the Gods shined on me as I received a call from my local library that the book I reserved a month prior had finally arrived.

The New Graphic Design School by Alan Swann made me hopeful that I really could step up my artwork and perhaps even make some money doing it!

Luckily, I was already headed in that direction. As I was pulling up I realized that the few cars that were strewn about the parking lot were all occupied. I looked at the clock and realized I now had another 25 minutes before the library opened up. Just my luck!

I should've bought something to drink while I was at the gas station and now it was too far to go back but just close enough to taunt me. I suffered through the heat.

I opened all of the windows and melted like a candy bar under the hot sun into the seats. Just when I thought I couldn't take anymore, I heard the sound of the door unlocking. Thank GOD!

Since I really make it an effort not to venture out of the house too often, I decided to stock up on supplies. I really should unplug once in a while and start reading actual books again. I was beginning to forget how much I loved the library until yesterday, when I walked in and was greeted with a 70 degree kiss from the AC faeries, and learned there was a whole other section to the library that I had been missing.

The "New" section sang to me like angels at heavens gate. I ended up with TWELVE books! (All of which are due in 2 weeks!) If any of what I checked out turns out to be a good book, I'll definitely let you know!

For those of you who want to start getting back into reading I have to tell you that there is an AMAZING E-book called "Little Brother" by Cori Doctrow that is quite possibly one of the best books that I've read in years! I downloaded it on my G1 and couldn't put it down!

If you find anything good let me know! I need some good reads :)

Hate groups on the web and what you can do about it....

There is something pressing on my mind that I feel the need to talk about. It's hate groups. Hate groups are living and breathing stronger than ever thanks to the internet. The argument that many hate groups use to breed is Freedom of Speech. The funny thing is that many of these groups are so hateful that they would like nothing more than to see America fail. So should they be able to hide behind the 1st amendment?

In my opinion, I believe once you denounce a country, you forfeit your rights to be protected by them. Hate groups are a form of terrorism and need to be stopped. While I do feel that everyone should be able to have their own opinion, I think that ultimately you have to respect the liberties of others around you.

I don't think that ANYONE should have the ability to cause another's life misery through hate speech or violence. It's disgusting.

Where I live, there is a very well known hate group that is coming for a visit to protest around area high schools. The cowards picked a day that the kids are going to be testing so that they will be subjected to this hate. We are holding a peaceful counter protest to see if we can block them from causing these students emotional distress.

One of my favorite informative sites to stop hate is Tolerance.org. Tolerance.org is run by the Southern Poverty Law Center which worked with Rosa Parks up until her passing. Their site is wonderful!

For those of us who are living our lives online, I ask you to stand up to hate and stop forwarding racist and or sexist jokes, I ask you to stop LOL'ing at hateful remarks, and stop using "gay" as a derogatory adjective.

You can also sign up for this facebook page which is working to erase hate in the US:

Good morning digi-verse!

Today is one of those days that I'm waking up bored! My wife has to take our only car to work, and I need to find a way to make some cash online. I could spend my day filling out surveys or I could build a website if I had a client or two who needed one. So what will I do??

I'm actually going to be setting up a video blog for all of you who are interested, and I'll be posting it soon! If you have been reading this blog and want to help out please drop me a line!

Ancestry.com-Knowing your roots

Have you ever asked yourself who you really are? Do you know anything about where you came from? Who were your grandparents really? Where did they come from? Who were their parents? and their parents? Did they leave their mark on their world? Were they rich? Did they leave you anything cool to share with the rest of us?

If you haven't already, take a trip over to Ancestry.com and find out. Right now they are having a real 2 week free trial. I've stumbled across a few other sites that said they had free trials but they billed first and didn't deliver on services.

I'll admit that when I first thought about trying out the service, I figured I'd jump on, find the folks I want to find, and be done. I won't need to extend my membership. It's been 2 days and I am totally 100% hooked!

I've probably spent 20 hours in 2 days finding my family lineage exploring every single person and I don't ever anticipate not being a member to this site!

It is my absolute favorite site ever built (yet). The only way to describe how I feel when I make a connection to another person in my tree is to say that, it's without a doubt the epitome a puzzle.
Or like reading a book about your self, every chapter asks a question, just as each chapter answers a question to the one before it.

Every person is a story and I am just finding out mine. I'll post things as I find them for those who are interested.

If you haven't checked out this site, I highly recommend doing so. I'd also love to hear what you do find!

Free stuff

I've always loved free stuff. Since the beginning of the internet I've found it really amazing at how much free stuff you can find if you look in the right places.

The coolest free thing I ever got was a pair of Asic Gel's from WebMD.com They were giving them away to the first however many subscribers they had acquired up until that point and gave them away as Christmas presents. It's one of the many reasons that I developed a love for marketing and advertising.

From now on, I'm going to try and focus this blog more on reviewing sites and finding cool free stuff for you. If you know of any cool ones let me know and I'll check it out!

Until next time, enjoy the web!

Love the insightfulness and compassion for equality in this kid!

Will Phillips, incase you haven't seen this, is a 10 year old little boy who has taken a stand against saying the pledge of Allegiance in the US until all people are treated with equality. He specifically has said that he will not say the pledge until gays and lesbians have the right to marry because he doesn't think it's fair.

That being said, many kids in his school have started to make fun of him and assume it means he's gay, however he has no problem setting the record straight. He's not gay but he does believe in equality.

One look at the comments on YouTube and you'll see the level of hatred that exists in this country. As a member of the gay and lesbian community, I have built a nice bubble for myself to keep hate out, and it's things like this that remind me of how evil our society is.

We are supposed to be a more progressive society yet the barbaric levels of hatred that come out when GLBT issues come up is terrifying. I hope that more people like Will stand up and speak out so that we can educate these ignorant and narrow minded homophobes before more of us get hurt and killed.

More people need to take a stand! Do you have the courage that this 10 year old does? Would you face the firing squad for the rights of others? Let me hear from you!

I think Will is amazing and his parents are too for supporting him.

Thank you for taking a stand!

If you're not questioning authority, it's prob. because you're drinking their water....

Food for thought Friday:

Over the last decade, many of us have jumped onto the health wagon at least a time or two as a means of making our lives better.

Although you may be losing weight, you may also be gaining something else that you weren't aware of. Toxicity!

One visit to:
http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/water-toxins.html
or
http://www.organicauthority.com/blog/health/38-pollutants-found-in-10-brands-of-bottled-water/

will show you exactly what you are probably ingesting by drinking water.

MMmmmm.....There's nothing like a nice big glass of Arsenic, Flouride, Chlorine, Prozac, and fertilizer on a hot summer day!

Another Earthquake has struck Chile

7.2 followed by a 6.9

Geez! Wth is going on with all of the earthquakes lately.

I think Cali is going to get a big one within the next 3-6 months and I hope that my friends and family over there are all safe! Although it hasn't happened yet, it will! Yikes!

The folks of Chile have got to be totally over the shaking of the ground. What are you doing to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster?

On Monday, here in the US tornado's struck in Oklahoma, Wednesday they deadly beasts hit Arkansas and now these storms are on their way into Florida along with the possibility for serious flooding.

Footage of the Tornado's from Monday can be seen here:
http://video.ap.org/?f=TXCOR&pid=MioP8T_3DA_W1DRldgoLqMcMIIi2j9_Z

What do you think about all of these natural disasters??

What are you doing?

What are you doing with your life? What are you doing with your time on a daily basis? Are you active and involved with the politics of your city? state? country? Are you keeping yourself numb to the bullshit that surrounds you or are you trying to do something about it all?

If you are doing your best to keep your head down and just do your work, you're not doing enough.

Trying to make money without making a difference makes your spirit poor.

Do something! Say something!

Use your blog, your website, your podcasting skills to make yourself heard.

If you don't want to speak up or don't know what to say, join those of us who are by sharing what we write.

There is a lot of work to be done in this country and I will do what I can to really make some progress.

Glenn Beck is on a rampage

and you need to be listening!

Right now on Fox News (the anti-christ of new stations), Glenn Beck is literally on a rampage about the state of our nation. I'm not big on rampages but we really need to pay attention to some of the shit that's going on around here.

Our government is taking over our entire lives and none of us are really doing anything to stop it.

When's the last time you got off the laptop and signed up to get involved with your surroundings?

We are living in a nation that is very driven by technology, which believe me I love, however when we are using that technology as an escape rather than a tool there is a real problem.

What are you using your technology for? I want to hear from you!

Fixed!

My old counter was apparently the culprit of the page disasters that were going on before. :)

I hope whoever my regular readers are will keep coming back!

More blogs to come!

Pain in the blog

There is something on my page that needs to go away! It keeps sending my readers to other pages! Uggggh!

Corey Haim dead at 38!

My favorite 80's celeb has suddenly passed away due to an overdose and was found dead. The news broke less than an hour ago for the 1st time....

I will forever miss Corey Haim:

He was loved by so many and those of us who were real fans always hoped he would beat his addictions, but no such luck....
I am completely at a loss of words right now.... Will write more later.

Desktop Tapper??

Do you ever get a song stuck in your head and You don't even know the words, you can't remember the title or who sings it? Have you ever tried to hum a melody to someone to try and get their help on unraveling the mystery for you but failed miserably?

Now you can TAP IT! That's right I said "Tap it"! There is this site that I came across that lets you use your space bar to tap out a rhythm or melody and then it magically reveals the name of that pesky song that has been driving you nuts since 1992!

Hooray for the folks at Bored.com!

I tapped out Take on Me by Aha. The 1st time I did it, the song wasn't on the results list, but I have to admit that was my fault. I only tapped the tune once and not very well. The second time I tried it, I did a few measures worth of the tune and viola! There it was "Take on Me by Aha".

And you thought your browser was stupid....

NetFlix it-Panic Room

This 2002 release was a decent flick when I saw it 8 years ago. However, for some reason I couldn't keep myself unpeeled from it today.

For those of you who might not have seen it, this movie stars Jodie Foster plays Kristen Stewart's newly divorced mom, while Forrest Whittaker, and Jarod Leto play 2 of 3 thieves.

For years Leto has been taking care of his grandfather waiting for him to pass away in order to inherit his money. Before the grandfather finally does kick the bucket he tells Leto that his fortunes are hidden inside of the panic room of an old home.

Unfortunately Leto and his gang had no idea someone else has already moved into the home.

Foster and Stewart suddenly find themselves trapped in the very room that these men are trying to get inside of. Things take a turn for the worst when the 3rd bandit pulls out his gun.

This is in my opinion one of the last great thriller's made. It's very suspenseful and has a well written story line. Actors and actresses are perfect and right on. If you haven't seen this one in a while, I would def. recommend it to anyone who wants to find something different.

Another reason to love email

The postmaster for the United States Post Office says that they want to stop Saturday delivery for mail service and they want to increase the postage rates again.

Don't they understand that the more they raise prices the more they will lose business.

Not only that but the last time that I received a card or letter in the mail, it had been opened by someone in the USPS system. The $20 my aunt had sent was gone, but they took the time to fashion a piece of tape to the back.

Seriously? I'd rather use UPS than USPS.

What happened to the days when the USPS was full of friendly and dependable servants for the community and a stamp was only 25 cents. The lines are always atrocious, the facilities are run down, and the employees are disgruntled....Oh and...we're up to 44 cents and climbing. Is there no end to the madness?

And is there any wonder why so many of us prefer email to snail mail?

Question for my techie friends....

If I have a cable connection, why do I need a TV Tuner card to watch my standard TV shows?

Is this just another way of sticking it to the little guy or what?

To say that I live my life online is an understatement.....

I have more or less locked myself into this comfortable cave like existence where I do basically everything online.

Not only do I have my laptop online but also my xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, the boys computers, my wife's computer, and our phones.

I love my G1. It is my favorite toy. I never have to get off line. Even when I'm in the can...err I mean car...ahaha.

To some that might seem out of control and believe me folks it is.

When I wake up in the morning I turn on my laptop before I turn on the coffee pot which is only about 10ft. away from my daily seat.

While Windows is loading, I make my cup of Joe, sit down and let my mind get taken away.

I have a problem. I know I do. I twitch when I don't twitter. I'm a net junky!

I love that I can connect with every person I've ever met in one place via social networking, I can do face to face hang out sessions with those people via Skype, I can order groceries online if I want/need to, I can do all of my banking, pay my bills, watch TV when Time Warner acts up, and work all online without ever leaving my chair.

Now if I can just find a personal trainer who will do Skype sessions maybe I can lose some of this digital weight?

Hit me up if you know of anyone that offers such a service. Holla!

Dear Time Warner...

I can't stand when I'm watching TV and the channel that I'm watching disappears.

Today I was watching Super Nanny, while nursing my cold. I kind of have this secret crush on Jo Jo, but we'll talk about that later.

The episode that I was watching was of "The Chapman Family". Season 2 Episode 4.

If you're a fan of Super Nanny, you'll know this episode.

The two selfish parents were leaving their 17 yr old and 14 yr old daughters at home to take care of their 3 younger boys on a daily basis. The girls were supposed to be home schooled via an online school but couldn't get their work done because their rat faced father was treating them more like slaves than kids.

The girls had called Jo to come rescue them, and as a former abuse survivor, I know how intense that call was for them to make.

These girls should've called social services and gotten the hell out of that house, but I understand how hard that is, so moving on...

The show had just gotten to the point where Jo confronted the fat bastard and his wife and told them how horrible they were when....

Yes fans and friends, Time Warner f*cked it up as they often do. I checked every other channel and this is the only one that was like this. You call it a fluke, I call it a conspiracy!

Trying to get someone off your back?

Do you want to spend your free time playing video games, but your wife, or parent, or boss won't let you? I've always found that the best way to get someone on my side is to "Sell them" on whatever it is that I'm into.

For instance, I recently came across the "Scene it-Box Office Smash Bundle" pack.

I got this on sale. I'd been eying it for quite awhile but with a family of 4 and no job it's hard to manage a $40 or $50 price tag.

My family and I are trivia buffs, we are game geeks, and we're always looking for cheap ways to have fun together.

I felt like a 5 year old with a new toy. It's gadgety, has buttons, bright colors. I couldn't wait to open the box, but because it was also for the kids I HAD to wait.

As soon as my youngest came home from school, I told him about what I had bought. At first he was very nonchelant and said "cool." (No enthusiasm)

I asked if he wanted to give it a go on a short game with me. "Sure." (again no enthusiasm).

By the time we finished the first round, my son was literally on the edge of his seat and really into it. There are so many different categories, and the game itself runs like a gameshow rather than a board game. The questions are designed for everyone from kids to the seriously obsessed movie buffs. I was amazed when my 14 year old beat me during the first round as I do consider myself somewhat of a movie buff.

Later that night when the rest of the family was home, I decided to try it out again, this time playing the long game. My oldest son who can be somewhat of a sore loser, also surprised me when he wanted to play again after being defeated by his brother. I think we would have played all night long if the two of them didn't have school the next day.

I totally recommend this to trivia buffs, film fanatics, singles, families, kids 12+, etc. Great bang for the buck!

Also this bundle pack comes with 4 wireless "buzzer's" (and batteries), plus the game, which means it's more or less expandable because you'll already have the buzzers in hand.

Did you know....

The 8.8 Earthquake in Chile was so forceful that it caused the Earth to speed up it's rotation?

Check out the article on NPR.com

They explain it all in great detail. I wonder how much longer or shorter our days are compared to what they were a million years ago, 1,000 years ago, and 100yrs ago?

And are you guys paying attention to how the Earth is shaking lately? I am all about trying to figure out when and where the next one will strike. If you know a link to an online resource with those stats, please let me know!

Sorry Folks

I've been a little out of it over the past week. Between cold medicine and vitamin C I've been battling my way through this hellacious cold. Speaking of Hell....

Have you ever heard of a book called 23 Minutes in Hell?

This book is amazing and scary all at the same time. I read it a little while back and have been wanting to share it with everyone.

The author of this book Bill Wiese, woke one night in the pit of hell, unsure of what was going on he tried to wake himself up. Unfortunately he was awake. For 23 Minutes, this man was shown what Hell is really like. Buried in the core of the Earth, he experienced the pain and hopelessness of what it would be like if this were his true eternal life.

Even if you're not very religious, I would recommend this read. I believe I am spiritual and I have my own relationship with God that is outside of the scope of any religion I've ever known. I don't like to be preached at or judged and I know others don't either. This book does neither. It's basically just a biographical recount of one man's experiences that may potentially save you in the afterlife.

I read this within 48 hours.
More stuff headed your way later today!

Time to Pony Up cowboy!

I really like the folky direction that music has been taking lately. Check out this guy Luke Doucet.

He's got it going on.

This is the kind of hit the road in a beater truck, windows down leave your worries behind with no regrets kind of music that will surely make your soul grooooove!

Which btw will prob. pop up in a Tarantino movie eventually.

Official Page of Luke Doucet can be found Here

Do something good for someone else

Have you heard about Pepsi's Refresh Project?

Leave it to the 80's soft drink leaders to get us off our digital asses to do something to change the world!

During 2010 Pepsi is giving away over 1 million dollars...yes $1,000,000 to people who are trying to make a difference in their communities. What's even better is they don't want your money. (amazing!) They just want you to stop by and vote for your favorite projects.

You get 10 votes a day. Here are some of my fave's:

Random fun for the whole family!

http://www.neave.com/television/

Looking for a site to further turn your mind into mush? Try Neave Television!
It's stuffed full of random "apps" that will make you stay and play.

For me personally, OCD and Neave TV (the actual television app of it) don't go well together. As soon as I get interested in the programming it changes!

However, if you enjoy television channel flipping fun, you definitely need to check it out.

I will say there are several other really good features out there worth checking out that I had a blast with.

There is a webcam "app" that had me making monkey faces for an hour. Yes. a whole hour!

Ever feel yourself getting lost in the light shows associated with iTunes or windows media player? What if you could control the show? with Neave, you can. I told you it's a dream for those of us who enjoy randomness.

With approximately 13 toys to play with, it's hard for me to believe that anyone other than Willy Wonka's oompa loompa's could have that kind of imagination.

On another note, I licked my monitor today and it DID NOT taste like a snozberry.

A must have for your bookmarks

In the wake of our recent economic climate, I'm always trying to save money as often as possible. One of the best sites I have ever found for coupons, coupon codes, and saving money in general is Retail me Not.

RetailmeNot.com is an amazingly easy to use website with coupon codes for over 50,000 stores both online and off.

With all of my website and design jobs, I'm always looking for deals on tools including hosts and domain registration/renewal. RetailMeNot almost ALWAYS has GoDaddy.com codes.

Honestly, I won't buy anything on the web without stopping by to see my friends at RetailMeNot.com. 98% of the time they have a code that saves me at least 10% on anything and everything that I need.

The coolest kid on YouTube award goes to....

Lucciano Pizzichini

He's 7 years old and plays better than anyone I've ever seen. Except for that Cha Cha chick....She's pretty good too :) But he's so good he amazed Carlos Santana...niiiice

I don't get it

If blacklisting people in the past has gotten through this capitalistic society, why hasn't the GLBT community done that yet? I like this page:

http://twitter.com/greylist

Now there's a great idea!

Don't support companies or organizations that don't support you. Sooner or later if enough people stop funding these companies they will listen and implement domestic partnership benefits or stop firing people for who they spend their nights with.

It's a no brainer people!

Swag Bucks!

You may have noticed the little "widget" on the right hand side of the page saying "Jess L. has xx SwagBucks". If you have no idea what swagbucks are you should definitely check it out! With swag bucks you get rewarded for surfing the web and it's almost like an online scavenger hunt.

For instance if I am looking up guitar tabs, I can do a search in the nifty toolbar that I've added to my browser. With a little luck, the swag fairy will gift me for my search and I will see a graphic that looks like this:

Swag bucks can be in any denomination and can be applied toward lots of really cool prizes like an iPod touch, or baseball cards, clothes, amazon gift cards, etc.

Before Swag Bucks I was getting really tired of the web. Now it's fun again!

So, like I said, if you haven't checked it out already....DO IT NOW! Don't forget to promote your own swag site mine is: http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/ChiefChimp

1st Blog

Yayyyy! Today is my first blog. This is the first one I am writing and from here on out will be (as titled) a little bit of this and a little bit of that....

Enjoy!
